THIRTY-FIVE of our region’s most talented young sportspeople are bound for Wollongong next month for the Academy Games.
The athletes, from Southern Sports Academy, will compete in hockey and netball at the 2014 ClubsNSW Academy Games on April 12 and 13.
Hundreds of athletes from across the state will head to the games, with the opening ceremony at the University of Wollongong on April 11, followed by two days of competition in Wollongong, Shellharbour, the Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands.
Southern Sports Academy Executive Director Greg McLay said it was a great opportunity for the up-and-coming athletes.
“Exposure to the very best competition brings out the best in our athletes and the ClubsNSW Academy Games is the pinnacle event on our calendar each year, and certainly the most popular activity that is scheduled for our athletes each year,” he said.
Among the athletes to watch will be netballers Meg Collins from Leeton and Sally Hunter from Yerong Creek, who are in the NSW Under 17 squad.
This year is the third consecutive year the Games have been hosted by the Illawarra Academy.
